SAIC Receives Two Nunn-Perry Awards for Mentor-Protégé Performance

April 14, 2004
(MCLEAN, VA) - SAIC announced today that it has received two Department of Defense (DoD) Nunn-Perry Mentor-Protégé Awards for demonstrating successful performance with two of its protégés, GEO Consultants, LLC of Kevil, Ky., and Houston Associates, Inc., of Arlington, Va. This is the seventh time that SAIC has been selected to receive this prestigious award.

The awards were presented to Mark Hughes, president of SAIC's System and Network Solutions Group, and Kurt Oschman, SAIC senior vice president.

Since the inception of their agreements with SAIC, GEO Consultants and Houston Associates both have benefited from technical training and assistance, which has allowed them to compete and perform successfully on a variety of DoD contracts.

"SAIC continues to make it a priority to mentor small businesses that demonstrate potential to succeed in the world of federal contracting, as well as possess the niche SAIC looks for in successful teaming arrangements," said George Otchere, senior vice president for SAIC's Small and Small Disadvantaged Business Development program.

Serving as mentor since 2002, SAIC has assisted GEO Consultants in improving the company's assurance processes and procedures in order to become ISO 9001:2000 certified, expanded its DoD environmental sector customer base and improved its business development and proposal production capabilities.

Similarly, SAIC's relationship with Houston Associates has played a role in growing that company's capabilities and revenue. In 2002 SAIC began providing training to Houston Associates in Microsoft certification, ISO 9001 Project Implementation, program management and technical and business infrastructure. In turn, SAIC and Houston Associates have successfully supported DoD transformation initiatives, specifically DISA's net-centric goals, including the supply of communications support during “Operation Enduring Freedom.”

The DoD's Mentor-Protégé Program was established to provide incentives for major defense contractors to help small disadvantaged businesses enhance their capabilities and to increase their participation as subcontractors and suppliers under DoD government contracts. The Nunn-Perry Award recognizes the best practices and program results of participants in the Mentor-Protégé Program during the prior two years. The award was named for former Senator Sam Nunn who sponsored the legislation that created the program and for former Secretary of Defense William Perry for his commitment to its implementation.
