SAIC Hosts Biometric Research Competition Winner
University of York Student to Present Innovative Biometric Concepts to Company Leadership
(McLEAN, Va.) Sept. 30, 2010 -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] today announced that Clement Creusot, a graduate student from the University of York in the United Kingdom (UK) and winner of the 2010 Biometric Research Competition visited SAIC’s headquarters in McLean, Va., this week to present his innovative research in labeling 3-D faces to SAIC leadership.
The competition was presented by the University of Kent, UK, the UK Biometrics Institute (UKBI), and sponsored by SAIC, with the goal of uncovering potentially influential concepts in biometrics from up-and-coming UK researchers pursuing their doctorate degree in the field. Creusot, a doctoral fellow, was selected for his paper entitled "Landmark Labeling for 3-D Faces," which focuses on new techniques for automatic face landmarking and recognition.
"The Biometric Research Competition was successful in uncovering some great ideas by young researchers," said Harry Helmich, SAIC vice president and division manager. "We received many innovative entries, and are pleased to sponsor this competition which challenged students to break new ground in biometrics."
During his visit to the National Capital Region, Creusot will also meet with officials of the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the United Kingdom. David Braun, design and development specialist from FCO Services, a trusted security partner to the UK's FCO, was one of the judges for the competition.
"I work in security development with the FCO, other UK Government Departments and foreign governmental bodies closely linked to the UK, and Clement's project really stood out in terms of innovation and approach," said Braun. "We were impressed with the high standards of the many UK entries for this excellent competition. On behalf of the judges I'd like to praise them all for their outstanding efforts."
In addition to his visit this week, Creusot previously participated with SAIC in the 2010 Biometrics Consortium Conference and Biometric Technology Expo, recently held in Tampa, Fla., where SAIC showcased how it helps empower field operations with mobility by leveraging cloud computing, and scalable and secure mobile technologies.
SAIC previously signed an agreement with the University of Kent on behalf of the UKBI to collaborate on biometric and identity projects in 2006. Fostered by efforts of the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the agreement aims to maximize cooperation from academia, industry and government in collaborative research and development.
"This competition showed the breadth and quality of new research being carried out by young scientists, attracted from all over the world to our leading universities," said UK Trade & Investment ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and Security specialist Frank Morris. "Research like this is crucial to helping UK Trade & Investment to attract leading international investors to the UK to collaborate with scientists in our universities and resolve some of the world's most-pressing security challenges."
